URBANISM THESIS UNIT

New Spirit challenges some aspects of urban design principles whilst finding new solutions of an urban regeneration spirit by addressing the social, the environment and economy essentials (i.e the sustainability) in the development of the studied area. The studio stresses the social factors by first addressing the spatial importance of the place within the city fabric.

The studio adopts a rigorous analysis of the streets connectivity with the visibility factors that will later able to formulate the central spine of a district, neighbourhood and other typologies of city district. The exercise address and readdress the primary artery, the backbone of the spatial structure of the area, that serves the place locally within the larger context in the city fabric. New Spirit investigates and proposes a more elaborated people oriented principles for a sustainable urban design systemic measures, encompassing the surrounding route networks in the global spatial configuration of the city.

REGENERATION OF JALAN AMPANG (EASTERN SIDE), KUALA LUMPUR

2019/20 Semester 2

The studio investigates and proposes a more elaborated people oriented principle for a sustainable urban design measures of Jalan Raja Abdullah and its surrounding, focusing on the social and spatial aspects of urban environment. The master plan proposal promotes the integration between the public and private uses in the effort to bring out a better provision of uses of the public space for the people in the surrounding community.

The program seeks to understand and addresses the current trend and urban design mechanisms (eg. through eco-urbanism, smart cities, future cities, city resilient approaches) in urbanism field of studies and analysis. It challenges the approach and some design principle set out by the local authority in their vision towards Greener Kuala Lumpur as stated in Kuala Lumpur Structure Plan 2020.

The project aim to reimagine the typology of a car showroom. With new travel concept being emerge in the market in recent years, owning a personal vehicles no longer be the most feasible and efficient way to travel, the car showroom will undergo a revolution to be a hub for a larger transportation network that cover the city. The project try to apply the principles of active frontage design to create positive pedestrian experience especially on the ground floor, where the human have the closest encounter with the building.

JALAN AMPANG COMMUNITY CENTRE

Residents along Jalan Ampang come from middle and upper class but the separation of their social demography clearly can be seen was caused by the Jalan Ampang itself. On the other hand, there are no public space or park for the community to gather also the existing night market at site supposedly acted as a social node for this community are not functional enough. Therefore, the designer introduces a new program called upcycling at the site as well as designing a new public space or park so the residents along Jalan Ampang is able to socialize with each other.

TEA HOUSE AS A THIRD PLACE TO ENHANCE PLACEMAKING OF JALAN AMPANG

The notion is to propose an urban Tea House in Jalan Ampang as a third place to promote the current and future generation about tea experience, tea culture in Malaysia and also around the globe in a socially connected atmosphere. It is also to bridge the void in the community by providing a learning platform and exchange skills opportunity that celebrate the public participation. This research will therefore integrate design approaches and ideas based on site observation, analysis and synthesis in Jalan Ampang by implementing the principle of placemaking and an appropriate planning and building programs.

IRISH CULTURAL CENTER

Jalan Ampang is always known as the Embassy Enclave of KL. It has always been one of the few favourite places for expatriates to live in due to the various embassies concentrated in this area. However, due to the existing of the embassy, the street frontage along the Jalan Ampang are mostly solid wall and not interactive with the pedestrian. Hence, the design aim is to reinforce the identity of Jalan Ampang as Embassy Row by introducing Irish cultural to improve the diplomatic relationship of locals and foreign expatraits, at the same time, enhance the socialbility of the Jalan Ampang.

CRICKET TRANSIT PAVILLION

Over the years, the eastern side of Ampang went through vast development to catch up with the development of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre. The main spine that connects the development is known as Jalan Ampang which links to the smaller parcel that consists of residential, commercial and institutional.

However, through urban studies, this vast development tends to leave behind the potential of bringing out the existing program in bringing in the end user to the area. Hence the architectural solution is to revitalise and re-celebrate the existing program which is the cricket clubhouse by integrating it through new urban social node of sports development. This program also strengthens the aspect as it provides to the surrounding institutional area around it.
