Flooding is the most common form of environmental disaster in Malaysia. It can potentially disrupts community life for long period up to weeks. Those particularly affected are usually in the urban areas. The project's objective is to design a building that will represent a symbiotic relationship between disaster relief and mitigation effort, community and natural environment.
To tackle the problem, I've chosen to focus on two issues which are to maximize the spaces and fulfill the basic requirements for the flood victims. Vertical farm has been chosen as the building typology which will be merged with the existing wet market at the site where it is hope to provide food temporarily during the disaster. During normal operation, the building houses the wet markets, dry markets, plantation areas and cafeteria that acquires its ingredients and resources from the building itself.
The concept is using metabolism as a metaphor. The name, taken from the biological concept, came from an image of architecture and cities that shared the ability of living organisms to keep growing, reproducing, and transforming in response to their environments. The idea is to create spaces which can rotate, expand, convert and grown in the future to maximize the space when the occasion need it to. Metabolically designed architecture is built around a spine-like infrastructure with prefabricated, replaceable cell-like parts which is easily attached.
In a conclusion, the vertical farming typology and the concept of metabolism was chosen to solve the issues that have been identified in order to design a mitigation and flood relief centre. It is important to provide the victims a safe and comfortable temporary shelter during disaster while tending to the basic needs as a human being.
